Loss and Renewal

While going through a difficult pregnancy, with hope for a bright future, I miscarried at twenty-four weeks, almost at the longed for cut off time when a baby could survive. I was never able to see or hold my much loved daughter as the medical staff thought this would be too upsetting. I was unable to really speak about this loss and pain for over ten years until I met my supportive and empathetic partner. Going through a terrible experience like this did help me to write more deeply and emphatically.

Loss and Renewal

A child was lost, ripped from my arms.

I walked through fire, hot burning sands.

They scorched my face, obscured the sun.

I raised my blistered hands, what have I

done to deserve this place? I plodded on.

My feet could hardly stay upon the

searing coals. I fell and lay along

sharp cindered shoals.

Like twisting knives they cut my flesh.

The blood ran deep, the wounds

would mesh into my soul, but I crawled on.

My throat was parched, my lips

cracked dry, I looked up where the

land met sky and thought I saw

a mirage appear. If only I could reach

the cooling waters there...

I stumbled on and felt strong arms

reach out to offer me the purest

drink I'd ever known - of faith and hope.

How thirstily I drank it down!

My strength renewed, I stood up

from the ground and walked into

the healing realm of... love.

About Teresa Hall

I've been writing poetry since a young child with most of my work inspired by the beauty and wonder in nature all around us. My environmental poems really took off after settling down in the Scarborough Bluffs area and enjoying long dog walks on the scenic bluffs with my partner. Two of these poems have been on exhibit at the Bluff Gallery, one in the Agincourt Library and others published in different venues. My goal has always been to share this love of nature in my work and through this I've met many others who also share the same feelings. I also enjoy writing philosophical poetry and am becoming more comfortable with personal writing.
