Jan Creelman
We Tell Each Other Stories, So That We Will Remember, The Schools, 24.
My purpose in art is not to produce a product but rather, to generate thinking and emotions through the process of resistance, introspection and contemplation. Batik is created with wax and interfering shapes that prevent dyes from penetrating the medium of choice. Art is organic and dynamic – it is always shifting, active, incomplete and always becoming. It continuously invites me out to a much larger home than I can imagine belonging to in the first place.
About Jan Creelman
Born of settlers in Mi'kmaq Territory, Jan grew up on the East Coast and “fell into batik” while observing a friend compose a market scene with wax and dyes. That first enchanting evening of story-telling shaped her core expressionist approach. Through this, her focus is on the thinking and emotions generated within viewer, not just the work itself. She has developed a vigorous, organic style stimulated by the extremes of any experience outside her comfort zone. The unexpected and the promise of a new adventure drive her on a daily basis.
