Two Seedlings. Displaced by the Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka, Two Seedlings explores my relationship with my Paati and my homeland, knowing both ancestral mothers only through photographs, phone calls and short visits. Growing up in a family of story tellers, I often listened to old tales and imagined what my grandmother might have looked like as a child, what her childhood on the island might have been like and how war and displacement have impacted her. Lacking access to Paati in ways that many of my peers accessed their grandparents – exchanging gifts at holiday dinners, as cherished keepers of childhood secrets or as warm hands tucking you into bed – my relationship with Paati lived mostly in my imagination. Two Seedlings is a product of my search for connection, and an awakening to the breadth of what has been lost. And, perhaps of what can still be saved. Two Seedlings is a Digital Story (short film) featuring original pen and ink artwork created by Ranganayaki Chinna Thirucottyappa (my Paati), black and white photographs - treasured remnants of a life once lived with peace and dignity in pre-1983 Ceylon, and original script, voice and digital weaving by the artist, Vijay Saravanamuthu. Closed captioning is available in English, and I am currently working towards Tamil captioning as well.

About Vijay

Vijay Saravanamuthu is a multi-talented artistic community organizer with a passion for holistic wellness. He is a queer Tamil immigrant living in Scarborough and has been meaningfully engaged in equity-seeking work with racialized communities over the last 15 years. Vijay works as a Health Promoter in the non-profit sector where he focuses on community education addressing social determinants of health and dismantling barriers to achieving greater health equity. As a younger person growing up at the crossroads of many cultures, Vijay often found peace and identity through artistic expression, including photography, classical dance, writing and storytelling. New to Digital Storytelling as an artistic form, Vijay is very excited at its potential for community healing. Vijay is an arts enthusiast, creative health researcher and advocate for social justice. When he can find time Vijay loves to cook, eat and entertain. He thrives in the sunshine.

கலைஞர் அறிக்கை (விஜய்)  

இரண்டு நாற்றுகள். இலங்கையில் நடந்த தமிழ் இனப்படுகொலையினால்  இடம்பெயர்ந்த பின்னர் புகைப்படங்கள், தொலைபேசி அழைப்புகள் மற்றும் குறுகிய வருகைகள் போன்றவை மூலம் மட்டுமே அறிந்து கொண்ட இருமூதாதையர்களான  எனது பாட்டிக்கும் எனது தாய்நாட்டிற்கும் உள்ள உறவைப்பற்றி ஆராய்கிறது. கதை சொல்லிகளின்குடும்பத்தில் வளர்ந்த நான், பழைய கதைகளை அடிக்கடி கேட்டு, சிறுவயதில் எனது  பாட்டி எப்படி இருந்திருப்பாள், தீவில்அவளுடைய குழந்தைப் பருவம் எப்படி இருந்திருக்கும், போரும் இடப்பெயர்வும் அவளை எப்படிப் பாதித்திருக்கும்  என்றுகற்பனை செய்து பார்த்தேன். எனது சகபாடிகளில் பலர் தங்கள் தாத்தா பாட்டிகளை அணுகும் முறைகளைப்போல எனதுபாட்டியுடன் எனக்கு தொடர்பிருக்கவில்லை  - விடுமுறை கால இரவுச் சாப்பாட்டு வேளைகளில்  பரிசுகளைபரிமாறிக்கொள்வது, குழந்தைப் பருவத்தின் போற்றத்தக்க  ரகசியக்காப்பாளர்களாக  அல்லது படுக்கையில் அன்பானஅரவணைப்புகளை  அள்ளி வழங்குபவர்களாக  அவர்கள் விளங்குவது போன்றவை  எனக்குக்கிட்டவில்லை  - பாட்டியுடனானஎனது உறவு பெரும்பாலும் என் கற்பனை சார்ந்ததாகவே  இருந்தது . இரண்டு நாற்றுகள் என்பது இணைப்பினைப் பற்றிய  எனது தேடலின் விளைபொருளாகும்.மேலும் இழந்தவற்றின் அகலத்தைப்பற்றியதும், ஒருவேளை இதனைத்தான்  இப்போதுசேமிக்கமுடியும் என்பது பற்றியதுமான விழிப்புணர்ச்சி ஆகும் . இரண்டு நாற்றுகள் என்பது ஒரு டிஜிட்டல்  எனப்படும் எண்ணியகதைசொல்லல் (குறும்படம்) ரங்கநாயகி சின்ன திருக்கோட்டியப்பா (என் பாட்டி ) உருவாக்கிய அசலான  பேனா மற்றும் மைகொண்டு உருவாக்கிய  கலைப்படைப்பு, கருப்பு வெள்ளைப்  புகைப்படங்கள் - 1983 க்கு முந்தைய இலங்கையில் அமைதிமற்றும் மரியாதையுடன் வாழ்ந்த வாழ்க்கையின் பொக்கிசமான எச்சங்கள், மற்றும் அசலான  திரைக்கதை, குரல் மற்றும்டிஜிட்டல் நெசவு கலைஞர் விஜய் சரவணமுத்து. ஆங்கிலத்தில் துல்லியமான படவிளக்கத் தலைப்புகள் கிடைக்கின்றன, அத்துடன் நான் தற்போது தமிழ் தலைப்புகளிலும் வேலை செய்து வருகிறேன்.

விஜய் பற்றி

விஜய் சரவணமுத்து முழுமையான ஆரோக்கியத்தில் அதீத ஆர்வம் கொண்ட பன்முகத் திறமைமிக்க கலைத்துவமான ஒரு சமூக ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர். கடந்த 15 ஆண்டுகளாக சமத்துவத்திற்காகப் பாடுபடும் இனவாத சமூகங்களுடன் இணைந்து அர்த்தமுள்ள பணியில் தன்னை ஈடுபடுத்திக்கொண்ட இவர் ஸ்காபரோவில் வசிக்கும் ஒரு தேர்ந்த தமிழ் குடிவரவாளர் ஆவார். விஜய் இலாப நோக்கற்ற துறையில் சுகாதார ஊக்குவிப்பாளராகப் பணிபுரிகிறார், அங்கு ஆரோக்கியத்தைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் காரணிகளையும் சுகாதார சமத்துவத்தினை அடைவதற்கு இடையூறு விளைவிக்கும் தடைகளையும் பற்றிய சமூகத்திற்கான கல்வியூட்டலில் தனது கவனத்தினைச் செலுத்தி வருகிறார். பல்கலாச்சாரங்களின் வழித்தடங்களினூடாக வளர்ந்து வரும் இளையவரான விஜய் , ஒளிப்படக்கலை , செந்நெறி நடனம், எழுத்து மற்றும் கதைசொல்லல் உள்ளிட்ட கலைத்துவ வெளிப்பாடுகள் மூலம் அமைதியையும் அடையாளத்தையும் காண்பவர். டிஜிட்டல் எனப்படும் எண்ணிய கதைசொல்லல் ஆனது கலை வடிவத்திற்குப் புதியது. சமூக ஆற்றுப்படுத்தலை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடிய அதன் ஆற்றலைப் பற்றி விஜய் மிகுந்த உற்சாகங்கொண்டுள்ளார். . விஜய் ஒரு கலை ஆர்வலர், ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான சுகாதார ஆய்வாளர் அத்துடன் சமூகநீதிக்காகக் குரல் கொடுப்பவர். சமைத்தல், புசித்தல் மற்றும் மகிழ்வித்தல் போன்றவற்றை நேரம் கிடைக்கும்போது விஜய் விரும்பிச் செய்வார் . இவ்வாறு இவர் உதயஒளியில் பரிமளித்து வருகிறார்.
