7th Generation Image Makers and Scarborough Arts Joint ArtworxTO East Hubs Project: Indigenous Youth Mural Making Program

This program took place in June 2022 as a part of the much anticipated ArtworxTO 2022 and East Hubs programming at the Scarborough Town Centre. This program was made possible through a partnership between 7th Generation Image Makers, Scarborough Arts, Scarborough Food Security Initiative, and local artist Mo Thunder.

Each of the murals on the letters were created and designed by ten local Indigenous artists (see below for names and bios) through a 5-week mural and large-scale painting program called “The Indigenous Youth Mural Making Program.” This program was led by artist Mo Thunder, and during the course of the program youth were supported in the development of their works and provided art kits, supplies, one-on-one mentorship, and an artist payment for their work.

This design remained on the sign for one year from June 2022-June 2023, and visited 4 different locations in Scarborough including the Scarborough Town Centre (ArtworxTO Programming), University of Toronto Scarborough, the Pan Am Centre, and Scarborough Food Security Initiative’s newest location at 772 Warden Avenue.

Special thanks on this project to 7th Generation Image Makers Arts Program Coordinator, Francine Peltier.

Curatorial Statement

We each had the natural world in our hearts, so we painted our first family in separate parts.

Each letter is designed separately, brought together through flowing lines.

We painted stories of roots and rivers, thinking about all of the living beings that sustain us.

We remember the earth breathes for all of us - the fish, bees, trees, butterflies and birds.

It’s all written on the earth, transcribed in the waters and camouflaged among the plants.

Skyworld reflects the changing tides here on earth, holding the fire in our bellies close to our hearts.

- Mo Thunder, Artist Facilitator, Scarborough Sign, 2022
