the will to extend
by Celeste Aracely

Two strings joining together; different facets yet all too similar now recognized as part of one whole.

The will to extend explores the many narratives a person shifts in and out of. Introducing the short film as an entangled mess of strings -or thoughts, facets- which is ever-changing throughout the frames.

Personal journal entries float across the screen during the next day as a storm of thought passes through. Through self-exploration, inquiry and constant renewal, everything passes by in an instant to diffuse into the environment. Finally, the frame comes together with Bell Hooks quote of love, originally said by M. Scott Peck. And still, the sun keeps moving and our narratives continue to reform.

A theme of love and its meaning has been a motif throughout System Update’s program. Art therapy, reconnecting to the earth + the symbiotic community and deeply rooting myself by healing from trauma informs my process. The tactile experience of a stop motion film was the first time I experimented with this medium. Gathering what I had, embroidery string best suited the lines of thought represented in my journal. Allowing it to fall pushed me to let go of perfection and give it the space to speak for itself.

Hearing different interpratitions is very welcome.
