TORONTO (Jan 8, 2021)

Instead of collaborating, women are often taught to compete. When women see each other looking good and achieving success, their first reaction is usually to compare themselves to other women before thinking to compliment them. Sister Sound System is a compilation of sounds from 10 young women who are looking to challenge this miseducation of women of colour in the system. Women are more powerful, more creative, and more resilient when they collaborate towards a common goal, and Sister Sound System is an example of this. 

Sister Sound System was created through an artistic and personal development program for young women of colour in Toronto called EAST Music & Healthy Relationships. The program was led by powerhouse entertainer and entrepreneur, Dynesti, at an organization called Scarborough Arts. Most of the young women in the program were recording professionally for the first time. Sister Sound System was created to prove that when marginalized sisters are given the support and guidance they need, they can dominate our sound systems and inspire a positive shift of energy in every space they enter.

ABOUT EAST MUSIC & HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

EAST Music & Healthy is an artistic and personal development program for young women of colour aged 16-24 in Toronto’s east end. EAST was set to run for 5 months, but was extended to 7 months with the Covid-19 lockdown disrupting the dynamic. The program was run out of a non-profit organization called Scarborough Arts, and was led by a powerful multi-disciplinary artist and entrepreneur named Dynesti. The program focused on a variety of topics including navigating the entertainment industry as a woman,  mental health, songwriting, vocal training, sexual health, grant writing, etc. Most of the participants of this program were recording music for the first time. The success that they’ve experienced is proof that when people are given the support and guidance to move forward as artists/entrepreneurs, they can achieve anything.
