Scarborough Arts (SA), founded in 1978, is a not-for-profit organization, serves the Scarborough community through innovative arts and culture programs for citizens of all ages. Scarborough Arts is looking for a Summer Gallery Assistant and a Festival Assistant! Applications are due by Monday, May 29 at 5:00 PM. 


SUMMER GALLERY ASSISTANT

*This is a youth position for those who intend on returning to full-time education in September 2017. The prospective candidate must be between the ages of 16 and 30. 

Overview
This is an exciting time to join the Scarborough Arts team as we prepare for a summer filled with activities. This summer we’ll be presenting events for Canada 150, Scarborough Film Festival, Alive with Art and more! We’re looking for someone who can roll up their sleeves as they step into a creative environment and help Scarborough Arts build a vibrant artistic community in Scarborough. 

Reporting to the Operations Coordinator and the Marketing and Communications Coordinator, the Summer Gallery Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the SA Bluffs Gallery and its associated programs and events. The prospective assistant will also work with the other members of the SA team in areas of customer service, events organization, marketing and design, and general office and administrative tasks. 

Duties and Responsibilities
— Assist with coordinating Scarborough Arts’ events, workshops and activities;
— Assist with gallery hanging and striking exhibits;
— Assist with SA memberships and database;
— Assist with Scarborough Arts marketing and media outreach;
— Create Scarborough Arts’ promotional items;
— Assist with and attend SA events including Scarborough Film Festival, Canada 150 – Scarborough, Alive with Art, and any other community arts workshops; 
— Outreach and promotion to the local community through meetings, photo calls, postcards, posters, brochures and on-line promotion; 
— Outreach to volunteers, including liaising with local groups and organizations; 
— Attend relevant meetings with staff, partners, volunteers and artists; 
— Respond to inquiries about SA programs and services from community members, volunteers and artists; 
— Greet gallery visitors and process any sales in the gallery or at events; 
— Respond to telephone calls, e-mails, and walk-in inquiries; 
— Additional administrative tasks as necessary; some physical labour required. 

Requirements and Qualifications
— Education and/or equivalent experience in the arts, community development or related discipline 
— Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven and creative environment 
— Ability to work individually and with a team 
— Effective time-management, multi-tasking and organizational skills 
— Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse community groups 
— Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
— Experience with event planning and organization an asset 
— Experience working in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Adobe Creative Suite; WordPress 
— Must be legally entitled to work in Canada 
— Adaptive to a flexible work schedule including some evenings and weekends 
— Access to a vehicle is considered an asset 

Additional Information 
Contract: 13 weeks @ 35 hours/week 
Start Date: Monday, May 29, 2017 
End Date: Saturday, August 26, 2017 
Remuneration: $15/hour

FESTIVAL ASSISTANT

Throughout the years, Scarborough Arts has hosted and partnered with community organizations to present annual Art in the Park events. This year, we are evolving Art in the Park to Alive with Art, which will comprise of two events: one onsite at the Harrison Estate Properties just behind the Scarborough Arts building and the other at the Scarborough Museum. Local artists and artisans will showcase and sell their work and a variety of performances, installations, workshops in various art forms will activate both spaces. All are welcome to both of these free events. 

The Festival Assistant will support the Operations and Events Coordinator in planning and implementing both Alive with Art events. The prospective candidate will develop skills in scheduling, budgeting, event and site management, visitor and community liaison, and cultural curation. This student candidate will also be tasked with the acquiring and handling appropriate permits and licenses; liaising with partners, vendors and participating artists; coordinating the call for community interest in coordination with the Scarborough Arts Marketing and Communications Coordinator; monitoring registration and attendance; and collaborating with the Scarborough Arts staff to ensure effective and efficient best practices for communications and programming.
