A new collaborative arts and culture after school program involving 5 schools and 8 collaborative partners.

The Kaleidoscope program has had a fantastic launch at Silver Springs Public School in north Scarborough.Program Coordinator Tamla Matthews-Morgan and program assistants Brendan Hong and Abineethi Singh, created a safe, fun, exciting space every Tueday and Thursday afternoon for 30 grade 4 students. In six sessions students enjoyed workshops on diversity, digital art, visual art, music, and creative movement. Responses to the program have been overwhelmingly positive with students wanting more Kaleidoscope and complaining about the short time frame. The classroom teacher offerred this feedback:

“Kaleidoscope was a great program. It gave the students many opportunities to learn about dance, art, and even character education. It exposed the children to different cultures (re: Brendan’s Chinese New year Presentation) The children really enjoyed it; both the program and the snacks! It included so many fun activities and allowed the students to learn and reflect. Too bad the program is so short. It was a wonderful experience” – Susan Kwok, grade 4 teacher Silver Springs Public School.
Next on the Kaleidoscope agenda is Military Trail Public School where the program will work in an after school capacity with grades 7s & 8s!

BACKGROUND

Scarborough contains some of the most diverse neighbourhoods and schools in Canada, yet the provision of arts and cultural programs is limited, particularly for newcomers, youth and culturally-diverse communities. To address this, Scarborough Arts has created Kaleidoscope, a new collaborative arts and culture after school program involving 5 schools and 8 collaborative partners. The program will involve 5 art forms (mural/graffiti arts, performing arts, music, creative movement/dance and digital arts) as a medium for intercultural dialogue and creative expression.

Tamla Matthews-Morgan is the program coordinator for Kaleidoscope and brings a rich blend of experiences, education and ideas to this exciting and innovative endeavor. Kaleidoscope is made possible by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which will support the project for five years.

Future plans for Kaleidoscope include a summer component and a documentary. Kaleidoscope will start January 2011 in the following schools: Warden Woods Public School, Silver Springs Public School, Military Trail Public School, St. Dunstan Catholic School, and St. Boniface Catholic School.

We welcome community support so if you are interested in volunteering please contact us at tamla@scarborougharts.com or 416 698-7322. We welcome all ages!
