How can youth capture and inspire social change through the arts?

Scarborough Arts’ flagship program, EAST Animating Democracy, will explore this question at its first Youth ForumThis Youth Forum explores the many ways that youth in Toronto have utilized the arts in order to mobilize their communities and ignite social change. A panel of esteemed artist-activists and community leaders will respond to questions from Scarborough’s youth and emerging artists.
Panelists include:

    –  Randell Adjei, Founder of R.I.S.E. Poetry (@RandellAdjei)
    –  Amanda ParrisWriter, Actor, Educator, and Host of CBC Arts’ new show, Exhibitionists (@amanda_parris)
    –  SPIN El Poeta, Spoken Word Artist (@spinelpoeta)
    –  Joan Lillian Wilson, Artist, Curator, Communications Specialist, Feminist and Youth Advocate
Gilad Cohen, Founder of JAYU Human Rights Festival (@akaGilad; @JayuCanada)
    –  George Knia Singh, Community Activist, Law Student, and Record Producer (@masterknia)
    –  Amish PatelComedian, Actor, Writer (@amishvp)
    –  Ify Chiwetelu, Comedian and Spoken Word Artist

The panel will be moderated by artist Tamla Matthews-Morgan, Manager of Scarborough Arts’ children’s programming.

The event will also showcase a trailer of the documentaries that the EAST Animating Democracy Youth Participants have been working on, as well as a speakers’ corner, food and drinks, and a musical performance by musician Scott Ramirez.

EAST Animating Democracy: Youth Forum is presented by Scarborough Arts in partnership with Trinity Square Video and Woodgreen Community Services’ Rites of Passage program.

Scarborough Arts’ EAST Animating Democracy is a year-long intensive program that invites Scarborough youth aged 16 to 24 to investigate important Scarborough issues and create well-told and engaging stories using the medium of photojournalism and documentary film-making.
