October 24, 2017. Scarborough, Ontario—It is with mixed feelings that we announce that Sergei Petrov has left his role as Executive Director of Scarborough Arts.
Sergei joined the organization in November 2015. During his two-year tenure at Scarborough Arts, he oversaw the development of a number of new initiatives including SA Together, a year-long arts residency program for local groups and collectives, and the SA Suite of Programs, a series of accessible events and workshops pitched by local artists for the Scarborough community. As the founder of the Scarborough Worldwide Film Festival over 5 years ago, Sergei also brought the excitement of the Festival into the organization’s operations. Our mission is connect arts to the community and the community to the arts.
Scarborough Arts is a not-for-profit organization that has been serving the community through the arts since 1978. Scarborough Arts develops, delivers and promotes arts programming and cultural initiatives in collaboration and partnership with the communities of Scarborough. We are one of only six Local Arts Service Organizations funded directly by the City of Toronto, however our programming is also supported via numerous other grants, local partnerships, and our members.
The Board of Directors provides strategic leadership, establishes policy, and oversees the operations and financial performance of Scarborough Arts. In addition to regular business, in the coming year our board will help tackle exciting initiatives such as:

Tarragon Theatre and Scarborough Arts are teaming up for the 3rd year to offer free playwriting classes for youth who live in Scarborough!
We are proud to announce the winner of the 2017 Scarborough Design Competition: artist Shafia Shaikh with her piece Growing Up Scarborough. After receiving numerous submissions from Scarborough and Toronto artists, the jury chose Shafia’s design as the recipient of this year’s award for its excellent execution and thoughtfulness in depicting Scarborough’s essence.
As an artist who grew up in Scarborough, Shafia believes that art has a unique ability to confront social issues and injustices, while allowing for individual reflection. She hopes to bring awareness to lived experiences of women of colour as a means to contribute to change. Read more about Shafia Shaikh and her winning design below.

My City My Six celebrates the diverse stories of Scarborough residents through an exhibition of six-word stories paired with visual art pieces from local artists. My City My Six is a Cultural Hotspot project, in celebration of Canada 150, produced in partnership with the City of Toronto.

For Scarborough Arts’ 32nd Annual Juried Exhibition and BIG ART BOOK, we are looking for Something Different—i.e. visual art and literary pieces that demonstrate a radical approach to or experimentation in style, form, material, display methods, subject matter, or technique.
The arts is a space where individuals can freely express, explore and respond. As visual artists, mixed media artists, photographers, writers, musicians and performers, we challenge ourselves in our practice, product and identity. Through our artworks, we continue to push boundaries and conversations. We have purposely chosen to be and to create “something different.”

Call for Applications: Healthy Arts for Seniors Program
(WINTER TERM: January to March 2018)
Scarborough Arts, in partnership with the East Scarborough Storefront and Agincourt Community Services Association, is pleased to announce Healthy Arts for Seniors (HAFS), a free photography and storytelling program for Scarborough seniors aged 55+. In a series of weekly workshops, participants will be encouraged to explore various ways of storytelling through words and images. At the end of the program, written, audio, and photographic works produced by senior participants will be collected and published in a print and online anthology and will be showcased at a launch event.
We are currently inviting seniors aged 55+ who are interested in learning the art of photography and writing to apply. No previous experience in photography or storytelling necessary! All materials will be provided.
