Scarborough Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Executive Director, Derek Spooner! Derek started his role at Scarborough Arts on Monday, January 15, 2018.

Derek brings a wealth of experience in program and fund development, operational design, data analysis, and communications. As a professional in non-profit management and fundraising, he has held senior level management positions in several not-for-profit organizations, most recently at the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund where he served as the Executive Director since 2015. His fundraising portfolio includes $9.04 million in fulfilled gifts for his work at various Canadian and international institutions including the Toronto International Film Festival, The New England Aquarium, The Boston Museum of Science, Mirvish Theatre Productions, and Free the Children, among others.

February 7, 2018. Scarborough, Ontario—In spring 2019, Scarborough Arts will be launching Reel Scarborough, a pilot filmmaking program which turns its focus to Scarborough-based filmmakers, artists and collaborators. The program will seek to connect aspiring and emerging local filmmakers with industry-related training, mentorship and showcasing opportunities. We will be shining a spotlight on the people and stories that shape our diverse and multicultural communities.

Additionally, this summer, Scarborough Arts will host accessible public screenings in tandem with our programs and festivals. These events will be free, community-oriented screenings aimed at bringing people together to enjoy a cool evening of cinema during the hot summer months. Where possible, we will strive to show local Scarborough and GTA content, alongside other well-known titles.

Scarborough Arts is pleased to announce its newly appointed slate of Board of Directors for 2017-2018 as voted by members at the Annual General Meeting held on the 21st of November 2017.

Representing a diverse range of sectors and armed with varying expertise, the Scarborough Arts 2017-2018 Board of Directors is as follows:

Call for Submissions: What’s Your Story, Scarborough? Short Prose and Poetry Competition for Emerging Writers

The Ontario Book Publishers Organization is pleased to announce that submissions are being accepted until January 15, 2018 for the What’s Your Story? Short Prose and Poetry Competition for Emerging Writers. 

This writing competition is part of What’s Your Story?, a series of events that celebrates the literary communities in four different community hubs: Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and East Toronto. In the spring of 2018, literary events will be held in each of these neighbourhoods featuring two winning emerging authors and their works (along with two established writers). There will be a total of eight winning emerging authors and eight winning established authors who have written works inspired by one of the four community hubs Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and East Toronto.  Short prose submissions must be between 1,300 and 1,500 words and poetry submissions must be a maximum of two pages.
