11th March

How long have you been a member of Scarborough Arts?
I have been a member of Scarborough Arts for 12 years.

What kind of art do you practice, and how long have you been practicing it?
I have been painting since 2001. I find it very exciting to take a blank canvas and create something unique from an infinite source of subject matter. However, I do love to experiment with a variety of media: pastel, oil, acrylic, coloured pencil, and mixed media (collages) – basically everything except watercolour. Depending on my mood, each medium becomes my favourite!

Tell us about the pieces we are featuring today.

I did this piece recently as a result of a class with Gary Smith, a great artist and teacher. My style tends to be somewhere between realism and abstraction. I like to mix representational elements with less defined ones. … Read More »

By Sidrah Maysoon Ahmad

I’ll take it from here, Mom.
your head leaned back against the couch
with The Weather Network left on
reflecting blue light in the glasses
put on before you fell asleep
your still face draped with flat black hair

Mom, I’ll take it from here.

making salmon burgers and smoothies
as you brave chemo
choking down hospital liquid you say tastes like chalk
you ask me to chop off your braid
so it’s not messy when your hair falls out slowly
I’ll wrap it in a cloth for you
and save it for when you’re better

Mom, I’ll take it from here.

you sewed elastics on the backs of my hijabs so they wouldn’t slip
I tucked grey flyaway hairs in behind your ears
we matched our hijabs, skirts, and lipsticks
and gave the world a chance to stare
I’ll take it from here, Mom.
Mom, I’ll take it from here.

let’s go back to the library
we used … Read More »

29th January

How long have you been a member of Scarborough Arts?
I believe I have been a member of Scarborough Arts for more than 15 years. I cannot recall exactly when I enrolled. I continue to be impressed with Scarborough Arts’ community approach, and their efforts to promote and help further the growth of new and emerging artists. I also really appreciate the opportunities provided by Scarborough Arts to display works several times each year, and accept works at the gallery on a consignment basis.

What kind of art do you practice, and how long have you been practicing it?
I began painting in earnest after my retirement from teaching in 1996. My initial studies were in watercolour. I also took classes in pastels and later pursued Japanese Brush painting. I received my “seal” – the mark of graduation in that art form. My … Read More »
