EAST Animating Democracy is looking for youth documentarians & photographers

Posted by scararts in Creative, Featured, Recent News. 1 Comment

21st September

This fall, Scarborough Arts introduces our newest installment of the EAST program: EAST Animating Democracy. Aimed at exploring democratic processes, the program seeks to put a spotlight on urgent issues in our neighbourhoods and communities from the youth’s perspective, and animate these issues by creating a documentary or a photo exhibition with the guidance of field professionals.

Scarborough Arts is seeking brazen and passionate documentarians and photographers aged 16 to 24 years old to join this new and exciting program. Wherever the participants’ interests lie — whether on poverty, homelessness, youth unemployment, accessibility, homophobia, racism, etc. — the program will provide the participants with guidance, structure, mentorship, and the right tools to create a high-quality product. The program will also teach skills in: critical thinking, curating, digital documentation, post-production, research and script writing, and collaboration.

EAST Animating Democracy runs from November 2015 to May 2016.

July 2015 Member of the Month: Shakil Akram Khan

15th July

How long have you been a member of Scarborough Arts?
I became a member just before entering and being selected for Scarborough Arts’ 2014 Annual Juried Exhibition, which was last October. So it has not been one year yet.

What kind of art do you practice, and how long have you been practising it?
I create modern Islamic and mathematical art based on calligraphic tessellations. I use Arabic square kufic script.  Although it is an ancient form of writing, it has an avant-garde look to it due to its geometrical form. The concept of tiling readable words is a novel concept in Islamic geometrical art.

I am a self-taught artist. I am an engineer — I did not have any formal training or education in art. I have spent the last twenty years learning and quietly creating my art in my spare time. Since I started … Read More »

June 2015 Member of the Month: Tim Manalo

8th June

How long have you been a member of Scarborough Arts?
I only became a member this month, and it’s been really exciting so far!

What kind of art do you practice and how long have you been practising it?
I’ve been a practising artist for about 5 years. My main focus is in sculpture and installation, as well as textiles. Textile art has been a recent addition, but my body of work consists mostly of sculpture and installation-based art.

Tell us about the pieces we are featuring today.

I’m showing two works at Scarborough Arts. The first one is called Balut, and it is of a yellow-coloured backpack made of resin. Inside there is a light, which shines through the hole in the middle of the backpack. The light only turns on at night. The sculpture was moulded from an actual backpack and then cast in resin.

The second … Read More »
