Yes, January 18, 2015 is Thesaurus Day and Scarborough Arts is celebrating this incredible resource used by people of all ages and stages as the inspiration for our next Bluffs Gallery exhibit, Word Lens.

The sky is the limit with Word Lens and we want a lively and thought-provoking exhibition. Words have power and so send us photographic images that explore both the subtle and obvious meanings of words. On the lighter end of things, we also want to see images that have fun with words.

Go ahead and think beyond the picture frame and send us your submissions – here are the submission guidelines:

Members and non-members alike are invited to submit up to two original pieces that must fit the theme Word Lens.
As submissions will be curated, we ask that you first submit images that are no larger than 72 dpi, … Read More »

How long have you been a member of Scarborough Arts?

I am a new member, having joined in May 2014. But I’ve been quite familiar with Scarborough Arts and the Bluffs Gallery for a very long time, having been a resident of Birch Cliff and Cliffside since 1987.

What kind of art do you practice, and how long have you been practicing it?

I am a fine art photographer. I have loved taking pictures ever since I was ten years old and the proud owner of a Kodak Instamatic camera. But it wasn’t until two years ago that I decided to seriously and passionately begin to use the camera as a tool to create fine … Read More »

I have been a member of Scarborough Arts since 2003.

What kind of art do you practice, and how long have you been practising it?
I practice visual, contemporary, and abstract paintings in acrylic, oil, and mixed media. I include nature’s material within my work, and thereby I am contributing to and bring to viewers the importance of protecting the environment. My pieces are on display in local businesses and institutions, and I exhibit locally. For example, I currently have pieces at Morningside’s Recreation Centre and Morningside Public Library.

Tell us about the pieces we’re featuring.

How long have you been a member of Scarborough Arts?
Literally, if not for a butterfly on 1859 Kingston Road, I wouldn’t have been a member of Scarborough Arts. The monarch butterfly wings brightly painted on the front door of the Bluffs Gallery was the invitation. I passed by it many times on my way to visit my grandchildren. And finally, in the early spring of this year, the curiosity got the best of me. I entered through the butterfly door, got soaked in the butterfly magic, let my imagination flow free . . . and signed up!

I am glad I did. My inspirational photo Wings of Light that was included in … Read More »

8th April

Scarborough Arts’ innovative pilot seniors writing program has wrapped up a fantastic eight-month run by launching its Moments book and album at the Scarborough Seniors Write Showcase on March 29 at Cedar Ridge Creative Centre.

Moments has captured stories of friendship, love, family, and many more life experiences through written and oral modes of storytelling.

The event provided the stage for participants to showcase their accomplishments over the past year under the guidance of freelance writer David Bester and noted Canadian novelist Sarah Sheard. Some participants read their submitted works on stage, while others shared new pieces inspired by their experience in the program.

It was a beautiful event, where participants were able to share their accomplishments with friends and family. Representatives from the project partners—Toronto Public Library, Tropicana Community Services, and Phase One Studios—and Hon. John McKay came out to support Scarborough … Read More »
