The Awakening presents visual artworks created by up-and-coming Scarborough Artist Ashante Blackwood, depicting the various stages that women of colour have, and continue to experience as they learn to overcome and love themselves in a society that has historically prioritized ideals of white beauty. From being broken down to nearly nothing, to building themselves back up, to not only finding their true identity but also learning to love it, this insightful exhibit presents works that tell a story of rebirth – the true Awakening of a melanin goddess.

SA Writes: Comedy Writing 101 @ Toronto Public Library - Agincourt Library
Jun 4 @ 18:00 – 20:00

In this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to create topical headline jokes, sketches, and humour within scripted dialogue. We will go over formatting, structure, and the art of crafting a joke in different media. Each participant will be given in-class writing exercises, light homework, see their jokes in action, and receive constructive feedback. Participants will leave the workshop feeling more confident in their ability to add humour towards their future writing endeavours.

A few years ago, Cathryn Naiker decided to leave her career in broadcasting to follow her dreams of becoming a comedy writer, comedian, and according to the British Journal of Psychiatry, completely insane. But the risk has paid off. Cathryn is the writers room Script Coordinator for The Mr. D Show, and Writer for The Beaverton. Cathryn was also a top finalist for The Writers Guild of Canada and Bell Media Diverse Screenwriters program. She also wrote and co-starred in the IPF funded web series “Dhaliwal 15” with YouTube star Jus Reign. As a comedian, she has performed at top comedy festivals such as Just For Laughs 42 (Toronto), Sirius XM Top Comic, Gilda’s Club, She Dot Fest, Border City Comedy Fest, Brantford Comedy Fest, and NXNE Festival, among others. She’s an in-demand performer in Canada’s comedy scene and continues to pursue her goals of hilarious world domination.
