SA Creates: Tissue Paper Stained Glass @ Scarborough Arts

Learn how to make beautiful tissue paper stained glass art for your windows! This workshop is great for kids and adults alike as participants will learn how create striking pieces of art that looks and displays like stained glass using simple materials. Learn about the process of layering colours and using texture to create atmospheric, translucent images that you can take home to brighten up your space!

This Tissue Paper Stained Glass workshop is also offered on April 12. Participants are not required to attend both, but if you would like to attend both please register for each separately.

The Mosaic Stories Workshop @ Agincourt Library

The Mosaic Stories is a mosaic mural project inspired by the stories of our elders. The project begins with 12 free weekly visual arts workshops for seniors and children focused on the theme of “Tell your story.” During these workshops the artist/facilitator will listen to the stories of the participants and then make use of their narratives to inspire a permanent mosaic mural for the Toronto Public Library’s Agincourt branch.

Camila Wong’s The Evolution of Self-Identity at the Bluffs Gallery @ The Bluffs Gallery

The Evolution of Self-Identity presents art works created by Peruvian born artist, Camila Wong. Wong’s exhibit explores self-identity through the combination of themes relating to art therapy, everyday life, humour, reflection, environment and social issues. Wong’s works can be seen to depict her bold artistic style of applying heavy paint and using repetitive, expressive energetic lines and brushstrokes to create optical illusion, lively movement, harmony and unity.

The Evolution of Self-Identity was curated by María Alejandra Olórtegui Ibáñez.

SA Creates: Overcoming Language Barriers @ East Scarborough Storefront
May 10 @ 10:00 – 12:00

This workshop invites ESL learners who may be frustrated by language barriers to make a collage on the theme of “My Definition of Success” and talk about the meaning of their piece. The session’s goal is to bridge the non-verbal realm to inspire verbal expression, thus building the participants’ English fluency and morale.

No art background is required for participation in the workshop, which will involve gathering, arranging, and gluing down images and letters to a substrate. The facilitator, an experienced artist and ESL educator, will supply all necessary materials, including images, backings, glue, scissors, alphabet stickers, and other embellishments.

SA Creates: Modern Batik Pt. I (Doors Open) @ Scarborough Arts

Join Scarborough Arts during our Doors Open event in learning about Modern Batik art during this two-session workshop. Explore the unique Modern Batik technique where wax is applied to fabric using water-soluble dyes. The effect that can be achieved through resistant dyeing often results in amazing, unpredictable textures and tones. Modern Batik designs can be complicated or as simple as the artist desires. The main goal when working with Modern Batik art, is to enjoy the medium and allow the versatility of wax and dyes to reveal itself gradually on fabric. The Modern Batik technique is fun and easy to experiment with, come join the adventure! Participants must be able to attend both sessions.

SA Creates: Exploring Great Artists – Vincent Van Gogh (Doors Open) @ Scarborough Arts

This workshop will take place during Scarborough Arts Doors Open event and will allow participants the chance to explore Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, “Starry Night”. Using the expressive mediums of oil pastel and a variety of papers, participants will explore the artist’s feelings for colour, composition and subject matter. The approach to learning is through problem solving and guided discovery. Each participant will choose and use oil pastel techniques to create his/her own expressive piece of art reflecting what the participant has found influential from Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”.
