Camila Wong’s The Evolution of Self-Identity at the Bluffs Gallery @ The Bluffs Gallery

The Evolution of Self-Identity presents art works created by Peruvian born artist, Camila Wong. Wong’s exhibit explores self-identity through the combination of themes relating to art therapy, everyday life, humour, reflection, environment and social issues. Wong’s works can be seen to depict her bold artistic style of applying heavy paint and using repetitive, expressive energetic lines and brushstrokes to create optical illusion, lively movement, harmony and unity.

The Evolution of Self-Identity was curated by María Alejandra Olórtegui Ibáñez.

Call for Exhibitors: Birkdale Art in the Park Deadline @ Birkdale Community Centre

The 7th Annual Birkdale Art in the Park is back and will take place on June 23, 2018! This year, Scarborough Arts has joined together with the Midland Park Community Association, SPARK, and Glen Andrew Community Association to make this year’s festival the best ever!

Midland Park Community Association representative David Barnes notes: “What began seven years ago continues to grow with many local artists and artisans who produce and sell original works of art including jewellery, photographs, mixed media, cards, oil and acrylic paintings and handmade crafts in our indoor and outdoor juried art show.”

Don’t miss the opening reception of Scarborough Arts member Charles Weiss’ Greetings from Scarborough on August 18th, from 1-4pm at the Cobal Gallery (870A Kingston Road, East York). 

Greetings from Scarborough includes both paintings and wood carvings that depict the wildlife of the Lake Ontario waterfront through a mixture of realism and whimsical styles. 

Everyone is invited to enjoy an afternoon of artworks, meet the artist and share their fishing stories!

BEYOND THE WATERS

Beyond the Waters explores multiple narratives of place-making in Scarborough and the importance of acknowledging the personal impact of the space that one occupies. With a close ear to stories of immigration and environmental ecosystems, this show acts as a collective reflection of the land beneath our feet and the shores beyond the city’s geographical borders.

Beyond the Waters presents artworks created by students studying within the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, inspired by the scenery surrounding the Bluffs Gallery.

The Awakening presents visual artworks created by up-and-coming Scarborough Artist Ashante Blackwood, depicting the various stages that women of colour have, and continue to experience as they learn to overcome and love themselves in a society that has historically prioritized ideals of white beauty. From being broken down to nearly nothing, to building themselves back up, to not only finding their true identity but also learning to love it, this insightful exhibit presents works that tell a story of rebirth – the true Awakening of a melanin goddess.
