Creating Repeat Patterns is a two-hour workshop that will introduce participants to the subject of surface pattern design for fine art, printing and textiles. Participants will learn about different types of pattern, and explore various uses for repeat pattern in art and design. Participants will also create and test a unique pattern design of their own. No art, design, printing or textile experience is necessary to participate in this introductory workshop. Materials will be provided.
Spirit of Africa is a fun, exciting, and interactive workshop that uses dance movement, music and song to tell the story of the African people. Participants will learn about how the everyday lives of African people transfers through the arts, where examples of their daily activities, values and customs are portrayed. This workshop will consist of a series of movements, song and drum rhythms from different parts of West Africa, followed by a formal instruction of a traditional dance piece ending with a “cookup” where participants are able to freely express themselves. Participants should come ready to move and have fun!
This Zine Building workshop will focus on making a community zine using traditional cut-and-paste style as well as digital print-outs. We’ll be exploring: layout and design, editing and proofreading stories, and assembling works for zines. By the end of the session the group will have developed a strong connection with the rest of the group and will have a copy of their zine to share with friends and family.
This Print a Fish workshop will teach participants about the Japanese form of printing on rice paper with real fish. Participants will explore this creative form of printmaking using the body of a real fish to transfer the surface details of these unique creatures onto paper using ink and paint. Participants will also gain insight into the ecology of the Scarborough Bluffs and the environmental aspects of fish during this workshop.
This two-hour workshop will give participants the basic skills needed to create their very own choose your own adventure story through the medium of a video game. Games will be text based and participants will be led through story-boarding, planning, and working with the interactive program Twine to create their unique game. Participants will also learn the process of game testing through the other members of the group. Participants will be required to bring their own computers to the workshop and in an effort to maximize time spent in creation, participants will be asked to download the free game program Twine prior to the beginning of the workshop.
Learn how to make beautiful tissue paper stained glass art for your windows! This workshop is great for kids and adults alike as participants will learn how create striking pieces of art that looks and displays like stained glass using simple materials. Learn about the process of layering colours and using texture to create atmospheric, translucent images that you can take home to brighten up your space!
This Tissue Paper Stained Glass workshop is also offered on April 26. Participants are not required to attend both, but if you would like to attend both please register for each separately.
