Writers of all ages acknowledged for outstanding prose, poetry, spoken word, song lyrics short stories

November played host to the inaugural Scarborough Writers’ Month. Scarborough Arts & Scarborough Writers Association came together to create the first installment of what is hoped to develop into an annual literary tradition. SA and SWA held two writing competitions: one for youth, another for adults.

Scarborough Arts has a long history of involvement within the literary arts, and has recently renewed writing programming in response to broad interest from local writers. Through a partnership with Scarborough Writers Association, SA hopes to continue to acknowledge and support talented writers and introduce new programming in the years to come.

Awards will be presented to 2010 winners for the adult category Keith Garebian, Robyn Marie Butt and Kate Marshall Flaherty on December 9. Awards for the youth category winners Erin Corrado, Sarah Farhat and David Chan will be presented on January 15, 2011 at Scarborough Civic Centre.

It is evident from this year’s pool of submissions that there is a very real passion for writing present throughout Scarborough and East Toronto’s artistic community,” said Benedict Lopes, Scarborough Arts Program Coordinator. “A fond and sincere thank you goes out to everyone who submitted work.”

In addition to awarding the cash prizes, SA will publish the First, Second and Third place pieces from each category in the January 2011 issue of surface & symbol. The top ten pieces from each category are available for viewing and download in the 2010 Digital Publication at www.scarborougharts.com.
